SPIC MACAY is a non-profit, voluntary, non-political and participatory student movement
registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
Since its founding in 1978, SPIC MACAY has strived to enrich the quality of formal education by increasing awareness about different aspects of Indian heritage and culture. We aim to inspire the young mind to imbibe the values embedded in it. We seek to inspire the youth by experiencing the mysticism embodied in the rich and heterogeneous cultural tapestry of Indian and World Heritage, with a hope that the beauty, grace, values and wisdom embodied in our art forms will influence their way of life and thinking and inspire one to become a better human being.
For this purpose, the most accomplished artistes of the country render programmes of classical music and dance, folk, poetry, theatre, traditional paintings, crafts & yog primarily in schools and colleges.
Our movement has a central executive body in New Delhi and organises programmes through a worldwide network of schools, colleges and educational institutions. People from all walks of life are a part of it and contribute with their ideas, time, finance and other resources.

Presence in Higher Education Institutions
SPIC MACAY has a presence in all major Centrally Fund Institutions, and major private Universities and is growing its presence across other state and private universities and colleges with collaborations of UGC, AICTE, AIIMS, Assam State Universities etc.
Presence in Schools
SPIC MACAY has been doing programs in private, rural, remote schools all over the country with its presence in more than 250 districts. It also has collaborations with CBSE, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Navodaya Vidyalaya, etc.
Presence in 20+ Countries Abroad
SPIC MACAY has chapters in the USA, Canada, 10+ Countries in Europe, Australia and many more. It has a wide network of volunteers across these countries and has been instrumental in taking our Indian culture beyond the boundaries of the Nation.

In one's ascent to reaching "the inner Mount Everest" the first base is concentration & patience, a priceless human value, which can be achieved through "Riyaz" with full dedication and committment. The second base is developing one's creativity which comes by a subtle understanding of the 'Shrutis', which comes by intense practice at the feet of the Guru. The third and final stage is aimed at entering the ALPHA ZONE, a realm which cannot be described in words. "

Bengaluru chapter had got a week’s dates from Dr. Anwesa Mahanta for a circuit of Sattriya dance. We booked their tickets, but one of her accompanying artists had to drop out, leading to ticket changes. Then some of the institutions started cancelling confirmed programmes as Janmashtami celebrations had been shifted from the September 2 (Sunday) to September 3 (Monday).

The year was 1986. Time - a warm day in September. Occasion - Smt. Leela Samson's Bharatanatyam Lecture-Demonstration on an open stage at Vivekananda College (University of Delhi). In a largely student-dominated audience watching Smt. Leela Samson painstakingly explain the nuances of Abhinaya, I was one of the very few teachers present.

“So, who’s getting the banners?” “Who’s picking up the artists?” “Who’s arranging the sound and lights?” “Which concert are you coordinating today?” “Most importantly, who is getting ‘the eye’?”…… this is about all we, in SPIC MACAY Pune, were talking about for the two weeks of the Heritage-2010 Series. Like always, SPIC MACAY does not need any major event manager to run the show. We, as a bunch of enthusiastic young college goers (or wait, we did miss a few days of college during that time!) managed to conduct 70 events in 15 days at over 25 institutes in and around Pune.
My Tryst with SPIC MACAY
My tryst with this noble movement was quite accidental. It started with a peep into the auditorium of Azad Hind College, Mumbai in 1995 -96 where Smt. Kishori Amonkar was at the peak of her performance. I had gone there not to listen to any classical music, but to volunteer at the shoe counter outside. For many of us, to volunteer for SPIC MACAY programs in neighboring institutions, was a good excuse to skip classes ‘officially’. Till that day, classical music just did not make any sense to me. But that curious 'peep' into the auditorium captivated me forever.
